Luke Wright steps down as England's national selector

England men's national selector Luke Wright will step down from his position after the ICC Men's T20 World Cup that commences next month. Wright, a former international cricketer who was appointed to the post in November 2022, will leave the job after a little over three years into the role, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed.

During his three years in the role, England had an underwhelming time in ICC tournaments. They failed to make the World Test Championship final in 2023 and 2025, and crashed out of the group stage in the Cricket World Cup 2023 and Champions Trophy 2025. They reached the semi-final in the 2024 T20 World Cup but were easily beaten by eventual champions India.

Citing time away from his family as the primary reason for resigning, Wright looked forward to what the future would hold for him. "It has been a true honour and privilege to serve as an England Men's Selector over the past three years," said Wright. "The role demands significant travel and time away from home and with a young family the time feels right to pass the baton on to the next person. I now look forward with real interest and enthusiasm to whatever cricketing roles the future may hold."

ECB Men's managing director Rob Key expressed his gratitude and labelled his contribution to England cricket as exceptional. "I have absolutely loved working with Luke. His contribution to English cricket has been exceptional and I trust his judgement as much as anyone. He has added so much more to this role than just being a selector.

"I'm very sad to see him go and I wish him and his family all the best for the future," Key said.
