I'll try to create an impact if I get an opportunity - Mossadek Hossain

Bangladesh batting all-rounder Mosaddek Hossain said he was aiming to make an impact in the upcoming ODI series against Australia if given an opportunity, considering it could be his first step towards earning a place in the 2027 World Cup squad.

Mosaddek was recalled to the national setup after a gap of four years following a strong domestic season, and the right-handed batter is keen to make it count at the international level as well.

Mosaddek, who last played an ODI in August 2022, has been in impressive form for Abahani Limited in the ongoing Dhaka Premier League, the country's premier List A competition. He has scored 310 runs in six innings at an average of 77.50 and a strike rate of 129.17, including a century and two half-centuries. He has also picked up 12 wickets in seven innings.

"According to our structure, domestic cricket is the only pathway through which, if you perform well, you can attract the selectors' attention. We really have no other route. While playing there, I tried to be as consistent as possible and remain consistent for as long as possible. I think this opportunity came only after performing well. I certainly want that for as long as my career lasts, I can continue playing for the national team," Mosaddek told reporters at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Thursday.

"I had to wait a long time, and wherever I played, I had to perform well. Then came the wait for this opportunity and finally getting it," he said.

"I think there are many factors involved here - team combination, the opposition, and various other considerations. Taking everything into account, I think the selectors now felt that this was the right time and that they could bring me into the team, so they have done that," he added.

"I would definitely be very happy (to earn a spot in the 2027 World Cup squad) and if I want to achieve that, I first need to perform well in the upcoming series whenever I get opportunities. That is the first step. If I can do well there, then I can hope that the 2027 World Cup will be a golden opportunity waiting for me," he said.

Mosaddek revealed that the selectors had spoken to him at length and given him a clear picture of his role at No. 6 or 7. He added that he was keen to leave an impact if he gets a chance against Australia.

"Sumon (chief selector Habibul Bashar) bhai clarified my role very well yesterday (Wednesday). If I get the opportunity in that role, I will try to fulfill it. Since I may have to bat at No. 6 or 7 and possibly bowl five to six overs depending on the team's need, I will try to execute those small roles properly. Because those who bat at six or seven, I don't think their stats or records matter much. In that case, impact is the most important thing. I will try to create that impact if I get the opportunity," he concluded.

The three-match ODI series will begin on June 9, with the second and third matches scheduled for June 11 and 14 respectively. All three matches will be played at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka.
