The first Twenty20 International between Afghanistan and India was in danger of being postponed by a day because of the BRICS Summit in the national Capital.

However, the Delhi District Cricket Association (DDCA) has stated that the match will go ahead as scheduled on Sunday. The final decision, however, is yet to be confirmed, with those involved in the conduct of the match maintaining that a change in schedule is still not off the table.

The match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium was facing security-related concerns arising from the Summit in the Capital, prompting the Delhi Police to seek its rescheduling.

A letter by the Delhi Dy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Central Range, addressed to the DDCA secretary, states that the summit "requires extensive traffic arrangements, including VVIP/VIP route regulation, traffic diversions, route clearance and deployment of personnel for smooth and uninterrupted movement of foreign delegates and associated vehicles".

The letter further states: “The cricket match, scheduled on 13-09-2026, is expected to attract around 25000-35,000 spectators. The area around the Arun Jaitley Stadium and DDU Marg, BSZ Marg, Minto Road, Kamala Market and adjoining roads already witness substantial vehicular and pedestrian movement. Additional match-related traffic and parking around BSZ Marg, Mata Sundari College, Raj Ghat and Bal Bhawan are likely to reduce available carriageway and cause congestion".

The DDCA, however, late on Thursday evening (September 10), said that there is no change to the match date.

“India–Afghanistan 1st T20I on 13 September at Arun Jaitley Stadium will go ahead as scheduled. Following a meeting with Delhi Traffic Police, DDCA has been assured of all necessary support and arrangements,” the DDCA said in a social media post.

However, some sources say there is a push to put off the match by a day so that it can take place on the festival day of Ganesh Chaturthi. The other two matches of the three-match series are on September 15 and 17.

The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB), organisers of the series, are yet to comment on the matter.
